This piece was created with the intention of highlighting bold brushwork and crafting something between an interior painting and a still life. The roses, depicted several times, still had plenty of color and freshness when painted. Later, they dried completely and lost their green leaves. I love how the little green piano stool ties the interior to the vase and roses, while the drapery breaks up the otherwise quite horizontal direction in the lower half of the composition.
